Methodology to calculate the most widely observed (MOBS) label values

The new European tyre labelling regulation came into force on 1st November, 2012. Now, all tyres on sale in the EU for passenger cars, light commercial vehicles and trucks are required to display a standard label. The new label provides the consumer with information on three basic tyre criteria: Fuel efficiency, wet grip and the level of external rolling noise. This legislation has a three-fold objective: Improve road safety, help consumers make more informed choices when buying tyres and reduce the environmental impact of tyres.

Principle

The collection and aggregation of label data that is publicly available from Internet websites, with the aim of using this data in our rezulteo websites to inform the consumer.

Data displayed in the absence of official values.

Data sources

Label data “sources” are European websites for Internet tyre retailers that display tyre label data in accordance with the obligations of Regulation (EC) 1222/2009 “On the labelling of tyres with respect to fuel efficiency and other essential parameters”.

Calculation method:

Step 1: Collect label values for each tyre in the data sources.

Step 2: Count the total number of data sources displaying label values.

Step 3: Count the number of label data sources for each tyre.

Step 4: Count the number of different label values for each tyre and the data sources (label X, Y, Z).

Step 5: Apply a first filter: The tyre must be present in at least 10% of the total number of data sources in step 4.

Step 6: Apply a second filter: The most widely observed (MOBS) value must represent at least 90% of the total number of label values observed for the tyre.

For 100 observed websites (step 4), the threshold set in step 5 is 10.
